We invite you to read this article authored by Eduardo Costa and Céu Mateus, alongside other authors, titled: "The economic burden experienced by carers of children who had a critical deterioration at a tertiary children’s hospital in the United Kingdom (the DETECT Study): an online survey."
Unplanned critical care admissions following in-hospital deterioration in children are expected to impose a significant burden for carers across several dimensions. One dimension relates to the financial and economic impact associated with the admission, from both direct out-of-pocket expenditures, as well as indirect costs, reflecting productivity losses. A robust assessment of these costs is key to understand the wider impact of interventions aiming to reduce in-patient deterioration. This work aims to determine the economic burden imposed on carers caring for hospitalized children that experience critical deterioration events.
We have a new video with Graham Miller about the Rodrigo Guimarães Chair in Tourism & Hospitality. In the video, he explains that with this chair we are investing in the training of young people for the future. It helps to expose them to cutting-edge thinking and international ideas. It also allows us to undertake research in the role that business will play in climate change, sustainability, and regenerating the planet, as well as creating a more equitable and fairer society for us all to live in.

This PhD research addresses the myriad challenges confronting in the healthcare sector, focusing on the implementation of the Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC) model. VBHC aims to enhance healthcare delivery by aligning resources with clinical outcomes that matter most to patients, thus fostering a healthcare system that is economically sustainable and highly effective. The relevance of this research investigates the dimensions influencing a paradigm shift necessitated by the need for evidence-backed value creation. In this pursuit, it is confronted the escalating quandary of optimizing healthcare delivery in a new framework of healthcare management. Despite the theoretical promise of VBHC, its practical application has encountered numerous obstacles, including inconsistent execution and limited empirical support mainly notably in dimensions like Change Readiness, Trust, Leadership and Organizational Culture. Is VBHC on a road to nowhere?
This research is contributing to the literature by delineating the complexities of organizational theory in VBHC implementation and offering pragmatic recommendations for healthcare systems aiming to adopt this model by stratifying dimensions into four overarching categories: Foundational Pillars of Value-Based Healthcare, Collaborative Ecosystem, Organizational Mindset, and External Landscape Influencing VBHC. By delineating a clear and actionable framework for healthcare providers and policymakers it leads to a more efficient, effective, and patient-centered healthcare systems that creates value.
