André Silva contributed to FRED Blog 

André Silva recently contributed to a post on FRED Blog on how the regulations of savings have affected “M1 money”. M1 describes the most liquid and widely accepted assets used to easily settle transactions: currency, demand deposits, and highly liquid accounts. FRED Blog is a communication channel for the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Rarely an economist outside the Federal Reserve System contributes to these publications. Congratulations!

  • New Research video

    "Can FM radio mitigate violent conflict?" This study conducted by Alex Armand, Paul Atwell, and Joseph Flavian Gomes, published in the American Economic Review, examines the role of FM radio in mitigating violent conflict and was highlighted in our latest research video. 

  • Doctoral thesis defense 

    Nova SBE congratulates João Pereira dos Santos on successfully defending his doctoral thesis entitled “Measuring causal impacts with natural and field experiments: Evidence for firms, workers, consumers, and voters”, which had José Tavares as supervisor.

  • NOVAFRICA's new project

    The Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center is developing a new project in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, entitled Countering Islamic Radicalization in Northern Mozambique: Radio Campaigning and Adolescent Sensitization in Religious Schools. It is conducted by Pedro Vicente, Alex Armand, Flavio Cunha, and Inês Vilela.

  • Welcome

    Nova SBE welcomes Rui Silva and Nicholas Hirschey that joined Nova SBE as Assistant Professors in Finance. Rui Silva research interests cover Labor and Finance, Organizational Economics, Empirical and Theoretical Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance and Entrepreneurial Finance. He will be teaching the Applied Corporate Finance Master's course. Nicholas Hirschey teaches our Master’s students Data Analytics for Finance. His research interests include Asset Pricing, Microstructure, and International Finance.

  • New book launch

    Elgar Introductions to Management and Organization Theory series is the latest book by Miguel Pina e Cunha, co-authored with Marco Berti (UTS Business School), Ace Simpson (Brunel Business School) and Stewart R. Clegg (University of Stavanger Business School and Nova SBE). It will be released in July 2021 and comprises a succinct overview of the field of organizational paradox theory, exploring contradictions and tensions in organizational settings. By conceptually mapping the field, it offers guidance through the literature on paradox, giving space for new interpretations and applications of the concept.

Francesco Franco

TVI24, Visão, Expresso, TSF, SIC Notícias, RTP and Jornal Económico, among others, disclosed that if finances are not sustainable, the impact of aging in public finances could lead to families being constrained to pay more taxes and to get fewer benefits of public services, or, in alternative, the deficit can become permanent. The news are based on the study Finanças Públicas: uma perspetiva intergeracional, promoted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which includes the analysis of Francesco Franco, Tiago Bernardino (PhD Student at Nova SBE) and Luís Teles Morais (PhD Student at Nova SBE).

Miguel Pina e Cunha, the holder of the Amélia de Melo Foundation Leadership Chair, was invited to participate in Sociedade Civil (RTP2) to comment on how managing people is an extraordinarily complex task, how difficult it became with the pandemic, and how it will be from now on.

Patricia Xufre

In the scope of the Elements of Artificial Intelligence (AI) course Patricia Xufre gave an interview to Diário de Notícias where she stressed that AI is already present in our daily lives, whether in the recommendation systems (Netflix), banking and financial markets, or route suggestions (Waze), among other sectors. She also defended that “lifelong learning must be the rule.”

Daniel Traça

Daniel Traça gave an interview to Authority Magazine where he talked about leadership – including the qualities needed to be a highly effective leader during turbulent times, and why he believes that with correct guidance better times will come. He was also asked by TVI24 to comment on how and why consumption levels increased significantly when lifting the lockdown.

Cátia Baptista, Scientific Director of the Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center, was asked by TVI24, Expresso and SIC Notícias to comment on the humanitarian crisis in Ceuta, how the phenomenon will likely worsen over the following years, and how Europe must create public mechanisms to allow young people to legally migrate.

Susana Peralta

Susana Peralta, in an interview to Jornal Económico, in the scope of her book launch, said that “the pandemic has aggravated inequality at various levels” and that “she would like to see in Portugal a more informed and generalized debate on key issues for the future of the economy.” To RTP1, about the 2021 ranking of schoolsSusana Peralta, who is part of the team of ten specialists who designed the proposals for the recovery of learning, stated that "the rankings are an asset as they reveal weaknesses in teaching and allow for correction of any asymmetries."

Pedro Freitas

Pedro Freitas, from Nova SBE Economics of Education Knowledge Center, was one of the experts heard during the parliamentary hearing that discussed the recovery of lost learning in the pandemic. “In order to put the recovery plans into effect, it is necessary to identify the most affected students to know who we really need to reach," he said. In addition, it is necessary to hire and train tutors, and these are processes that "can be extended over time, so it is very relevant to start acting now", he warned. The topic was reported on the Observador. Pedro Freitas also gave an interview to Rádio Renascença on the schools ranking where he defended a change in the criteria for allocation of students and teachers to schools, in order to countering inequalities and “breaking intergenerational education transmissions”.

Ana Balcão Reis

Nova SBE, in collaboration with Observador published for the 5th consecutive year a schools ranking based on national secondary exams and a second ranking based on equity, an indicator that was used for the 1st time. Also to this journal, Ana Balcão Reis stressed that "the ranking alone does not allow to assess the quality of a school", but it contributes to "greater transparency and accountability." To Expresso she emphasizes that “the democratization of access to information” and the greater “dialogue and attention around the classifications she observed within the school and between the school and the parents”. “Exams are not the only objective of the school. However, they are an important part and have the advantage of providing objective and measurable data.”

Pedro Pita Barros

To Gabinete de Crise (Rádio Observador) Pedro Pita Barros mentioned that “the way we got used to the virus over this year (…) gives hope that we have found the balance (…) that lead us back to normal life (…)”. Also to Rádio Observador on the celebrations of the Sporting victory, he said that "the club and health authorities failed for not having presented a prevention plan", and admitted that gatherings, without physical distancing and masks, could have negative consequences. To Expresso he stressed that “the lifting of patents makes sense if the restriction to increase production is the high price established under the patent or if the company holding the patent does not license the production to other entities, which is not the case with current vaccines.”

Afonso Eça

Afonso Eça, from Nova SBE Finance Knowledge Center, was interviewed by Jornal de Negócios on the various ways in which central banks issue their own digital currencies. “The most likely case is the adoption of a hybrid model between commercial banking and the central bank”, he said. "It is not the central bank's role to manage the accounts of millions of people", he added, concluding that "in other words, a model similar to the current one, in which the central bank issues the currency, but are the commercial banks that makes currency reach people.

Pedro Brinca 

Pedro Brinca was interviewed by Expresso about the prospects for inflation dynamics in the US and Eurozone. “The US budgetary response was much stronger than in the eurozone, reaching around 19% of GDP, already including some new measures by President Biden.” Also to Expresso he commented on the early indicators that suggest GDP recovery to be under way and on what we can expect for the next few months. Capa à Contracapa (Rádio Renascença e Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos) interviewed him on the future of remote work, work relations and new challenges resulting from post COVID-19 dynamics.

  • “European Funds: Results & Challenges”

    Daniel Traça made an assessment of what has been done and what remains to be done for the national economy to converge with the European one in the webinar “Structural Funds: the context, results and challenges of the next cycle”. The event was organized by the European Commission Representation in Portugal, in partnership with the Agency for Development and Cohesion (AD&C).

  • “Banking, NPLs and the post-pandemic”

    Francesco Franco participated in the panel on “Banking, NPLs and the post-pandemic” at the 4th edition of Advocatus Summit Lisbon, an event that links business law to business and economic agents. Francesco Franco spoke about the expected increase in the NPL, but he said that what matters is how much this increase will be and when it will happen.

  • Economia de Francisco at Algarve

    The “Economia de Francisco” arrived to Algarve. The session included a presentation and debate on this initiative that was born out of a letter addressed to young people by Pope Francis, challenging them to participate in an event with the purpose of thinking on a “different economy”. The online session counted with the participation of Joana Castro e Costa, Executive Director from Nova SBE Leadership for Impact and Ricardo Zózimo.

  • IV Paradox & Plurality Meeting

    The IV Paradox & Plurality Meeting took place to discuss the paradoxes of stability/change that permeate the changing nature of work. The Paradox & Plurality Meeting is an annual event organized by the Amélia de Mello Foundation and the Center of Paradox and Organization, under the the Twinning project EUFORPP, to discuss organizational and societal problems from a paradox perspective. Miguel Pina e Cunha and Anibal Lopez were on the organization committee.

  • “Unconditional Basic Income (UBI): Can we afford it?”

    Susana Peralta e Catarina Neves (MSc Alumna e TA) participated in the webinar “Unconditional Basic Income (UBI): Can we afford it?” The event started with a discussion on the paper by Karl Widerquist and Georg Arndt: “The Cost of Basic Income in the United Kingdom: A Microsimulation Analysis” (2021). It was followed by a brief presentation of how this paper´s presented model could be adapted to the Portuguese context, a roundtable discussion on how much could a UBI cost in Portugal and how could it be financed.   • “Specialization and diversification of the Portuguese economy: what perspectives in post-covid?”

    Joao Amador participated in the round table of the conference “Specialization and diversification of the Portuguese economy: what perspectives in post-covid?”, organized by the Núcleo de Investigação em Políticas Económicas e Empresariais (NIPE) from Universidade do Minho and the Conselho das Finanças Públicas (CFP). This initiative opened the CFP's 2021 conference cycle, which has the partnership of a national higher education institution at each session.

  • “Pandemonics: How COVID-19 defined 2020 and what we have ahead of us”

    Pedro Brinca presented “Pandemonics: How COVID-19 defined 2020 and what we have ahead of us”, at the Associação Portuguesa de Leasing, Factoring e Renting (ALF) annual conference. The conference was subordinated to the theme “Leasing, Factoring and Renting – Recovery of the Portuguese Economy.”

  • Conference on corporate bankruptcy and restructuring

    BPI and Nova Finance Knowledge Center are organizing a conference on corporate bankruptcy and restructuring. The event will be held on October 8th at Nova SBE and the main objective is to discuss recent advances in academic research on bankruptcy-related topics. There will also be a Panel discussion on COVID-19. The conference will host a limited number of papers. The submission deadline is August 1st, 2021.

  • Data Science intensive training course

    Nova SBE Data Science Knowledge Center and Le Wagon – the coding and bootcamp French school – offer from 10 July to 11 December, an intensive training course in data science. The course covers Python and SQL programming, machine learning, neural networks, facial recognition, data engineering and other artificial intelligence mechanisms in business. During June, the “Data Impact School” features a set of workshops and talks in the field of data science.

  • Fahiz Baba-Yara Role to Play interview

    Role to Play interviewed our PhD Student Fahiz Baba-Yara to find out more about his research and PhD experience. Fahiz Baba-Yara started his PhD journey in our doctoral program in Economics and Finance in 2015. His research focuses on finance, specifically on how machine learning models help us making better decisions and how we can improve the forecasting ability of machine learning models. Fahiz is now heading forward to Indiana University as Assistant Professor from next semester.

  • Nova SBE PhD Summer School

    On July 9 the PhD Summer School "Sovereign Debt Crises and Computational Methods" will host a conference. Nova SBE faculty members and researchers are welcome to attend the conference by registering here. The program is available on here.

  • Nova SBE brings Elements of AI to Portugal

    Nova SBE launched the Portuguese version of the Elements of AI course for professionals and enthusiasts in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The online course, developed by the University of Helsinki and the company Reaktor, has been made available for free by the Finnish government since 2019. Elements of AI aims to demystify and democratize AI and offer tools to participate in building the future with this technology. Since its launch in Portugal, the course has already enrolled more than 1600  students, thus joining more than 650 thousand people from more than 170 countries.
