SDG #. Description
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of writing about the success of our PhD students in their applications for FCT PhD Fellowships. Historically, these fellowships were our primary source of funding for new and current students, making them essential to the growth of our research community. Recognizing the complexity and demands of the application process—especially for those just beginning their PhD journeys—we’ve devoted significant time and effort to guiding our candidates through this challenging path.
Since 2022, however, our school has started offering fellowships to students, and in 2024, we introduced full, four-year fellowships. This development has given us the flexibility to support more students, but securing additional FCT Fellowships remains critical. With FCT funding, we can allocate our school’s resources to further enrich our students’ academic experiences and research endeavors.
Nova SBE has consistently outperformed the national average in the Economics and Management Panel since 2019, with a minimum acceptance rate of 50%. This year, we achieved a significant milestone: a 100% success rate for all students who applied. Furthermore, in a year when the Economics and Management Panel awarded the fewest fellowships since 2019—only 37 in total—11 of those were secured by Nova SBE students.
Such remarkable success is the result of the combined efforts of our Program Directors, supervisors, Program Managers, and volunteers, all of whom go above and beyond to support students during the application process. This, along with our consistently high scores in the Research Unit, ensures that our school remains a leader in research excellence.
Our PhD programs are now more integral to our research community than ever before. Attracting top-tier candidates and nurturing their growth into successful professionals is a long-term commitment, and it will be exciting to see the full impact of our dedication in the coming years.
To our PhD students, we are incredibly proud of your achievements and look forward to witnessing the impact of your research on the world.

The return of the sophist?
As researchers, what do we fundamentally do? At the core, we collectively pursue the truth and strive to use it for the good. But what do these concepts mean? What is truth? What is good? Here, we find two research questions. But have we done this research? Or is our research grounded in two concepts we’ve never taken the time to research?
“I don’t need to have formal answers to these questions to be a researcher”, one might think. But in fact, all of us do have answers to both these questions, even if we’re not explicitly aware of them. The predominant answers of our time are: “Truth pertains only to what is empirically verifiable and objectively measured. Meanwhile, Good (ethics) is subjective – i.e. relative to each person, as opposed to being universally objective and independent of the human mind and will.”. These are the assumptions of modern research – although, more recently, the subjectivity of the latter has begun to spill over into the former.
If we accept this ontology, it logically follows that any collective pursuit of an objective good —existing outside and independent of the person —becomes futile, since good is ultimately subjective. And if objective goodness does not exist, research is no longer a collective pilgrimage toward the achievement of the good, but rather a contest of ideas, each fighting for acceptance within the realm of subjectivity.
Let us question these assumptions, lest the pursuit of truth and good turn into a self-indulgent battle of sophists.
