Navigating the Philosophical Foundations of Empirical Science
This fall semester brought me an insightful journey into the philosophical foundations of science. When our cohort started the RRBM Doctoral seminar, we all had similar questions, some of which I believe may suit management academics from different levels: What role do values play in science? How can we as scientists contribute to the progress in the science of business and management, and progress in humanity through our research? What does it mean to be a responsible social scientist in the business disciplines?
The course was a semester-long exploration, with students across different business disciplines, that provided us with a better understanding of how to advance science and how can science contribute to society. Here are some important insights:
By delving into the responsibility of scientists to produce credible knowledge, there was a significant emphasis on openness, transparency, and reproducibility, which echoes the growing momentum in scientific communities toward ensuring the reliability of empirical findings. The discussions around the focus of business research on addressing real-world problems, and the transition from merely "That's interesting" to "That's important", resonated deeply with all the participants. This also mirrors the broader initiatives in responsible research, including special issues and awards for impactful contributions. In a world where misunderstandings about the philosophical foundations of empirical science can impede progress, this course equipped us to navigate these complexities. It serves as a compass guiding us from scientific curiosity to socially impactful research, aligning with the evolving landscape of responsible and meaningful scholarship.
As we move forward, armed with a refined understanding of our roles as (aspiring) researchers, this course has undoubtedly shaped our academic journey. As scientists, we feel more qualified to embrace our roles as ethical and responsible contributors to the scientific landscape, fostering a commitment to responsible research that transcends disciplinary boundaries.
