OceanSchool project

SDG #. Description

The Nova SBE Environmental Economics Knowledge Center created a project dedicated to sustainable growth, called OceanSchool, in partnership with the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) and IPMA, and financed by EEA Grants 2020, which featured the first intensive course in February on the Carcavelos campus. The project arises from the need for economic training programs focused on the theme of Blue Growth, an EU strategy to support the sustainable growth of the seas and oceans, which recognizes the potential of the maritime and marine sectors as drivers of the economy in Europe, and benefits exchange of students and researchers from the two educational institutions. For Antonieta Cunha e Sá, coordinator of OceanSchool at Nova SBE, “this project fills a gap by offering multidisciplinary courses in the area of sea and ocean sustainability. There are already other initiatives to promote skills in different areas related to blue growth, but there were no training programs in economics focused on this topic”.

Telework: a Blessing or a Curse?

Imagine a workplace where employees have the freedom to choose their work hours, set their own goals, and shape their roles according to their preferences while performing optimally. Imagine also that these employees do not feel pressured to always remain online and are able to fully recover before they start another workday. Is achieving work-life harmony a utopian vision or a recipe for disaster, and is there a feasible way to attain it?

Nothing prompted telework’s massive adoption like the 2020 pandemic (Eurofound, 2022) but research has long showcased telework as a complex reality for both employees and organizations. Telework is associated with higher job satisfaction (Morganson, Major, & Bauer, 2009), higher absorption work enjoyment and intrinsic work motivation (Peters, Poutsma, Van der Heijden, Bakker, & Bruijn 2014), higher productivity (Allen, Golden, & Shockley, 2015), and increased perceptions of autonomy (Dambrin 2004). It is also associated with reduced commuting expenses (Faulconbridge, Jones, Marsden, & Anable, 2020) and reduced absenteeism and turnover (Gibson, Blackwell, Dominicis, & Demerath, 2002). However, telework has been linked to lower inclusion (Morganson et al., 2009), lower co-worker satisfaction (Golden, 2007), long working hours (Montreuil and Lippel, 2003), higher isolation, intensification of working time (Maillot, Meyer, Prunier-Poulmaire, & Vayre, 2022), and perception of limited opportunities for promotion (Baert, Lippens, Moens, Weytjens, & Sterkens, 2020). It is therefore crucial to understand how these flexible work arrangements are associated with demands and resources that cause various psychological and physiological costs to employees (Taser, Aydin, Torgaloz, & Rofcanin, 2022).

The pandemic has taught us that telework is not a one-size-fits-all solution. But what makes it work and what does not? How may companies support remote employees while guaranteeing prime productivity? And what may increase employees’ empowerment, so they benefit from telework? As organizations adapt to the post-pandemic landscape and seek ways to replicate traditional in-person structures in virtual settings, it is fundamental to understand how these flexible work arrangements are associated with demands and resources that affect various psychological and physiological costs to employees (Taser, Aydin, Torgaloz, & Rofcanin, 2022). My research aims to unveil the relationship between work flexibility and employee empowerment while observing intervening mechanisms such as psychological detachment, employee guilt, engagement, and psychological safety.

For management scholars, this means we may advance the literature by refining our understanding of psychological empowerment to encompass a new and important relationship - that with flexibility – and by identifying key mechanisms that may impact this relationship.

For organizations, this means we may inform them in the development of organizational telework policies as well in the tailoring of flexible arrangements. In doing so, we hope to also shed light on the factors that contribute to employee psychological empowerment, which in turn enhances employee engagement, performance, and talent attraction.
