Researchers on Media

Pedro Vicente

Pedro Vicente spoke to Geração Digital (RTP Africa) about the impact study of ProFuturo, a program for introducing technology in a school environment, carried out by Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center in about 40 Catholic schools in the city of Luanda, Angola. The work showed that where technology was introduced by ProFuturo, there were improvements in the performance of children, teachers were more motivated and there was more interaction in the classroom.

Afonso Eça

Afonso Eça, from Nova SBE Finance Knowledge Center, spoke to Jornal de Negócios about the controversial move by Elon Musk, Tesla’s leader, to buy bitcoins as part of his investment plan and accept payments in this cryptocurrency. "In any other cases where a company on the Standard & Poor's index took money to invest in an asset so volatile, its CEO would have been seriously attacked." He adds that "if he does not know what to do with the companies’ money it should distribute dividends".

Nova SBE Economics of Education Knowledge Center

The Nova SBE Economics of Education Knowledge Center released provisional data from the second survey on distance learning. The researcher Pedro Freitas spoke to Público about the increase in the number of students with access to a computer with internet at home since the beginning of the pandemic. “Today, the situation is expected to be better,” he points out, recalling the arrival of the first 100,000 computers in the Escola Digital program and the investments made by municipalities.

Irene Consiglio and Sofia Kousi

Irene Consiglio and Sofia Kousi, from Nova SBE Behavioral Lab, were interviewed by Público and Polígrafo  about their study on cognitive bias related with Covid-19 vaccines. "What we observed was that people understand the bias and correct it in hypothetical scenarios, but not on their day-to-day routines" said the professors. “What this shows is that explaining the problem and how to fix it is not enough. This requires more responsibility for those who generate news, because people have difficulty managing it by themselves.”

Daniel Traça

Daniel Traça spoke to Dinheiro Vivo, TSF and Jornal de Negócios about the structural changes brought by the pandemic. He says the economy is dormant, "but it is not on its knees". "The challenge is to ensure that when it comes back to work, the business structure is not deteriorated," he said. To Jornal Económico he took stock of the two years of the Social Equity Initiative, a partnership with La Caixa Foundation | BPI, which already includes the country social portrait and a database of the social sector.

Susana Peralta, Mariana Esteves, Pedro Freitas and Bruno Carvalho

The return to distance learning “will widen the gap in inequality” among Portuguese children. The conclusion results from data gathered by Susana Peralta, Mariana Esteves, Pedro Freitas and Bruno Carvalho, from Nova SBE, and Miguel Herdade, from the Ambition Institute. They stated that the report serves "to remember that the Resolution of the Council of Ministers (July 2020) provides that, during the distance learning period, the schools may open to students for whom the school considers the mixed regimes ineffective.” The report was cited on Expresso, Sábado, Público, Visão, TVI24, Observador, among others.

Steffen Hoernig

Steffen Hoernig, in an interview to Jornal Económico, explained that the 5G auction will only be successful if the number of participants is sufficient to “start the process of discovering the best use of the (public) spectrum” and if there are competitive offers, without being “coordinated between operators”. But the certainty that a new operator will enter the market " is a victory for Anacom", he stressed.

Pedro Brinca

Pedro Brinca spoke to Diário de Notícias and Dinheiro Vivo about the number of Portuguese people with more than one source of income having fallen 16.2% in 2020 when compared to the previous year. "With the drop in demand, the first jobs that tend to end are those with a precarious link because they are cheaper to eliminate", he explains, recalling the tourism and retail sectors which – due to their seasonal nature – employ many people on a part-time basis.

Susana Peralta

Susana Peralta in an interview to Jornal I commented that the crisis should be paid for by everyone to compensate those who saw their activities ended. To Fórum TSF and Diário de Notícias she spoke about the IRS revenue record in a year of greatest falls in the economy. To Visão she explained that “with the end of moratoriums, there may be an avalanche of bad credit in a situation of generalized risk”. About distance learning and the worsening of the conditions of the most needy students Susana spoke to Jornal Económico, Rádio Renascença  and Jornal de Notícias.

Pedro Pita Barros

Pedro Pita Barros, published on his blog a set of comments of his and other Nova SBE Health Economics and Management Knowledge Center members’ authorship, concerning the public consultation of the Recovery and Resilience Plan. Regarding the lack of vaccines, he mentioned to Exame that “it became easier, during an emergency, to use additional mechanisms to ensure the remuneration of private efforts. The biggest challenge is how to balance this out of the emergency.” To TVI24 he stressed that suspending patents to produce more vaccines will not solve the problem of its shortage."

João de Castro

João de Castro, Academic Supervisor of the Nova SBE Digital Experience Lab, coordinated the study Opportunity for Artificial Intelligence in Portugal, conducted by the Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos with the support of Google. It analyzes the state of artificial intelligence in Portugal, its opportunities, but also its constraints. The study was mentioned on Expresso, Exame Informática, Diário de Notícias, Jornal de Notícias, Público and TSF, among others.
