What if we were wrongly considering political candidates as irrational, and ended up not supporting them, just because they show emotion?
My research shows that individuals have the lay belief that emotions are a signal of irrationality, which causes them to perceive as irrational and penalize the same argument when it is conveyed with emotion.
In the context of political communication, we find that the mere presence of emotion in a political speech has a negative impact on individuals’ support, voting intentions and voting behavior. We also find that this emotion penalty is stronger among left-wing citizens. This is important for policy and marketing, since it contradicts conventional wisdom and common practice that assumes emotions benefit political speech since they increase persuasion and appeal.
While there is a lot of research regarding what type of emotion is more prevalent across different points of the political spectrum from left to right, the literature also assumes that emotions, in general, benefit political speeches. However, the literature has overlooked the effectiveness of political speeches that are relatively void of emotions; in other words, what is the net effect of the presence of emotions, relative to more neutral speeches from an emotionality point of view? Building on the rationalism foundations of political orientation, we find there is an emotion penalty deriving from a lay belief that perceives emotions as inherently irrational, and therefore, we propose that the conventional wisdom and practice of including emotions in political speeches may be misguided.

Bianca Crivellini Eger, Assistant Professor at Nova SBE, spoke at Leading People, exploring the permeability of boundaries between multiple identities. Her research shows we are more than the sum of our parts, examining how identities interact in the professional context. In her flash talk, "Belonging in a Fragmented World: Identity, Purpose, and the Workplace," she asked: What can we learn about identity at work by studying drag queens? Bianca found professionals who are lawyers, HR managers, or doctors by day and drag queens by night. She explained, "We all have multiple identities. We are professionals, but also parents, siblings, friends, artists, and athletes. We constantly move between these identities. Workplaces often expect consistency, but people are messy; they change and evolve. This is a tool for growth."
