Francesco Franco, in an article in Público on the experience gained in the crisis of 2011, explained that “there were three things in the COVID-19 crisis that were not done in the previous crisis: preventing the policies from being pro-cyclical, applying the escape clause of the rules of the Pact of Stability; being much more flexible in state aid rules; and implementing some level of transfers between states”. He believes this was partly due to the very important lessons from the last crisis.
Pedro Brinca, to Expresso, commented on the comparative performance of the Portuguese economy in the Eurozone, 10 years after the troika intervention and bailouts. Also to Expresso he commented on historical increase observed in households savings during the last year and in which instruments Portuguese households are putting their money on. In another edition of Expresso he commented on economic developments in the first quarter of 2021 for Portugal. Economia Viva conferences organized a session dedicated to the idea of European Health Union (EHU) in which Pedro Pita Barros participated. In his view, “it is simply not feasible to build a single health system in Europe, due to existing differences that reflect different preferences of societies.” To live with the diversity of health systems means that “a EHU should focus on aspects like being an economic public good, having important positive externalities, like the European Digital Health Space, interests of national health systems being aligned, like the joint procurement of products and services, and promoting shared values across countries, like solidarity and equity in access to health care”, he concluded.
