Pint Of Science Festival had a “pint” stop at Nova SBE

Nova SBE hosted a major event related to the world's biggest international science communication festival. This year, with our school's support, the Pinto of Science organization reserved an extra session of the national program and, for the first time in Portugal, researchers tried to simplify scientific discussion with a ‘mug in hand’. During the festival's warm-up, topics as important to our society as Education and Immigration were discussed with Pedro Freitas and Susana Peralta.

Susana Peralta spoke about the “Impact of ‘returnees’ on electoral results”, a joint investigation with João Pereira dos Santos and Miguel Fonseca. Pedro Freitas, PhD in economics, presented “What policies for a less unequal school and education?”

Achievements

  • Sai Kalvapalle publication analyzes pitching

How do entrepreneurs convince investors of their business ideas, and how do investors in turn determine which ideas to support? Over the past few decades, scholars have been rigorously addressing these questions in different ways but by examining the same phenomenon – pitching.
In a recent publication in the Academy of Management Annals, co-authors Nelson Phillips (UCSB Technology Management), Joep Cornelissen (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University), and Sai Kalvapalle critically review the large body of work on entrepreneurial pitching. Their review finds a bifurcation of vantage points from which scholars have approached the phenomenon of pitching: that of the entrepreneur, or that of the investor.

  • New research video series

Our most recent research video is with Roberto Ragozzino in the scope of his publication Not Like the Rest of Us? How CEO Celebrity Affects Quarterly Earnings Call Language. In it, he explains that the study explores whether celebrity CEOs use certain types of language that affect stakeholders’ perceptions, more than non-celebrity CEOs do during earnings calls. The findings suggest that CEO celebrity can create value for firms, but its effect is more indirect and subtler, as it leads to different language use, which then influences public information disclosure and stakeholders’ perceptions and reactions. The work is authored by Roberto Ragozzino, Tim G. Pollock (University of Tennessee), and Dane P. Blevins (University of Central Florida) and all researchers expect this research and further insights to be useful in raising public awareness about the subject of CEO celebrity and its effects, in terms of leadership and corporate performance.

Researchers Corner

Hand-to-mouth agents

"Hand-to-mouth agents" (HtM) are individuals or households with little to no financial reserves, spending most of their income on basic necessities, leaving little room for saving. The paper "Who Are the Hand-to-Mouth?" by Aguiar, Bils, and Boar* provides an examination of these households, focusing on their characteristics and behaviors. Their low net worth or liquid wealth makes them vulnerable to financial constraints and macroeconomic shocks.

The authors categorize HtM households based on low net worth (less than two months of labor earnings) or low liquid wealth (below a borrowing limit or close to zero), resulting in two types: those with low net worth (H2MNW) and those with low liquid wealth but substantial total net worth (H2MLIQ). Using data from the PSID (Panel Study of Income Dynamics), they find that 40.6% of U.S. households are classified as hand-to-mouth, with 23.3% identified as H2MNW and 17.3% as H2MLIQ.

The study finds that hand-to-mouth households do not exhibit higher spending growth. Instead, their spending is more volatile and unpredictable. Persistent household preferences, rather than current asset levels, predict low consumption growth and spending differences.

This emphasize the importance of considering the heterogeneity in household preferences and behaviors when analyzing consumption patterns and designing fiscal policies, rather than focusing solely on current asset levels.
