Researchers Corner

"The Asymmetric Effects of Inflation"

In April 2022, I wrote, together with Bruno P. Carvalho and Susana Peralta, a note on the effects of inflation on the budgets of the poorest families. This note, prepared within the scope of the project “Portugal, Balanço Social”, part of the Social Equity Initiative, in partnership between the Fundação “la Caixa”, BPI and Nova SBE, showed that in order to maintain the purchasing power of families, that include individuals who are among the poorest 20% (who have an equivalent income per adult of up to €542/month) it would be necessary to subsidize these families in a total of almost €400 million, if the inflation rate were 6%.

Since we launched the note, inflation has continued to increase and the year-on-year change in the Consumer Price Index was 8% in May 2022, the highest value since 1993. With this inflation, it would now be necessary to transfer €632 per year to each household so that a rise in prices would not affect the consumption of food, housing and transport by these families (€531 million in total). If we use the inflation rates for each of these three expenditure categories (12.3% for food, 13.4% for housing and 10.8% for transport), the amount of transfer needed to maintain purchasing power would be €1187 per year for each household (€997 million in total).

This group already lives with great deprivation and has no room to accommodate price increases in essential goods. It is therefore urgent to find quick answers to ensure that these families have conditions compatible with the satisfaction of basic needs.
