Brands are essential to the market and part of the socio-cultural processes of western economies. Through brands consumers can develop their identities and build social relations. With the start of the internet, digital-born brands such as Twitter, Zipcar, Airbnb, and Instagram emerged. These brands have different business models, mediate consumers’ interactions in the market, possess distinct traits from traditional product brands, and a different way to create value. For this reason, we wanted to understand how consumers relate and experience digitally native brands. Within the empirical context of Instagram, we carried out in-depth interviews with users of Instagram to understand their feelings, and experiences of the brand. Drawing from the anthropology and architecture fields, we aim at a conceptualization of digital-born brands through consumers’ experience with the Instagram brand.
Building on prior literature that explored the sociological impact of brands and the evolution of society and economies, we intend to enhance the understanding of brands and contemporary society by articulating consumers' experiences with the digital-born brand Instagram. With the increase of the digitalization of society it is important to understand and study how technologies and platforms affect society as well as to discuss the creation of social spaces in which people can relate and interact socially in a more meaningful way and create stronger bonds and intimacy. The creation of public spaces and the encouragement by governments, schools and universities of this type of interaction is seen as necessary and urgent to form citizens and develop a sense of community. With our study we invite scholars, practitioners and society not only to discuss this and other impacts that social networks and platforms have on life in society, but also to develop strategies that reduce the negative impacts and amplify the positive ones.
