Generative AI (GenAI) is changing the landscape of scientific research. Emerging studies and leading AI scholars highlight its potential in guiding exploratory research (Wang et al., 2023; Bechky & Davis, 2024; Anthis et al., 2025). GenAI enables robust pattern detection and algorithm-supported induction, and it can serve as a thinking partner to help researchers formulate theories, derive implications, and even simulate and predict human behavior, through so-called “synthetic subjects”—see Binz et al. (2025) for more details. These tools extend beyond traditional research methods. However, like any technology, the use of GenAI comes with ethical responsibilities. Researchers must remain transparent, critical, and accountable in how AI tools are applied and reported in scientific work.
For Ph.D. students and early-career researchers, this moment presents both an opportunity and a challenge. We must learn how to use GenAI effectively, but also lead the way in shaping how genAI should be integrated into the future of research. At the same time, GenAI cannot teach us how to think like researchers. The Ph.D. journey is about developing core research skills: critical thinking, methodological rigor, creativity, and resilience. No technology can shortcut that process. We should embrace GenAI thoughtfully, preserving our human competence rather than replacing it.
This reflection is based on my experience at the INSEAD Summer Camp on AI in Organizational Science, held in June.
