FCT Individual Doctoral Fellowships  with 50% of sucess rate

The FCT continues to support our PhD Students though the FCT Individual Doctoral Fellowships. In the last 5 years, we had a minimum application success rate of 50% . This year we broke our own record reaching a 56.3% application success rate and our student João Pato (PhD in Economics and Finance) ranked 2nd countrywide. Researchers on Media

Sofia Kousi

Sofia Kousi, researcher from the Nova SBE Behavioral Lab, developed a study that explores consumers’ emotions in a cashier-less supermarket using Artificial Intelligence technology to scan their items with their phone and automatically pay through an app, without having to wait in line at the cashier, or use cash. The study showed that consumers find this store format easy to use and to understand and are more likely to feel excited and empowered. At the same time, they do not experience more loneliness or helplessness, nor do they feel more ‘observed’ than in a regular supermarket. The study was highlighted in the latest edition of Marketeer Magazine.

Nova SBE Economics of Education Knowledge Center

Nova SBE Economics of Education Knowledge Center launched the study "Rotatividade dos Docentes nas Escolas Públicas Portuguesas" which reveals that the turnover rate of teachers in Portuguese public schools is, on average, higher than 20% and is directly related to the percentage of students with social support, the classifications in national exams and the level of education of the parents.  The study was  ECO, CNN, Expresso, Jornal de Notícias, Observador, Público, RTP and SIC, among others.

Pedro Martins

Pedro Martins was interviewed by Money, Money, Money (Expresso Podcast) and El Periodico about unemployment rates in Portugal hitting historically low numbers (5.7%). He was also interviewed by Expresso about Portugal being one of the least generous countries in the EU regarding public sector salaries.

Paulo Soares Pinho

Paulo Soares Pinho was one of the specialists interviewed by Público about the new tax on banking profits, which is not consensus among economists: some say there are signs regarding the risks of decapitalization of the sector and others defend fiscal justice.

Pedro Brinca

Pedro Brinca was interviewed by Deutschlandfunk (german radio) about the energy sector. He spoke also to TVI, Dinheiro Vivo, Jornal de Negócios,  Expresso about the impacts of inflation on households’ savings, firm behavior and on the purchasing power of bank deposits. Also to Expresso, he commented on Double GDP in 20 years? Last time was in 1990”,  Portugal is amongst the least generous in the EU with public sector wages and Tourism, the likelihood of the Portuguese economy experiencing two consecutive quarters of chained negative growth and the role of tourism. He was also interviewed by TVI regarding the impacts of the fall in fuel prices and what to expect going forward and on the comparison between the crisis of 2011-2013 and the current one in terms of their relative impact on Portuguese household’s purchasing power.

Pedro Pita Barros

Pedro Pita Barros was interviewed by RTP about the resignation of the Minister of Health, Marta Temido. Also to RTP in an Especial Informação he commented on the crisis of the National Health Service. To Expresso he spoke about the health insurance sector in Portugal stating that “although it is often highlighted in the public discussion that 30% to 40% of residents in Portugal have some type of insurance, insurance companies are not more than 3, 5% of total health system funding”

Pedro Pita Barros and Eduardo Costa

Pedro Pita Barros and Eduardo Costa were interviewed by  Público about the total debt of the National Health Service to suppliers rose to 2.3 billion in June, the highest value in the last eight years. Eduardo Costa was also interviewed by SIC Notícias where he analysed the chaos in emergency services.

Nicholas Hirschey

Nicholas Hirschey had the paper “Do Municipal Bond Dealers Give their Customers ‘Fair and Reasonable’ Pricing?”, co-authored with John Griffin and Samuel Kruger (University of Texas at Austin) cited in Bloomberg Law and the Wall Street Journal. The study says that municipal-bond dealers are failing to provide their customers with the best execution and fair pricing, despite customer protection rules.

Susana Peralta

Susana Peralta was interviewed by Público to answer questionário de Proust where she disclosed a little more about herself and her preferences. She was also interviewed by Jornal Económico about how taxpayers who did not benefit from the elimination of the surcharge or the unfolding of the 2018 and 2022 IRS levels were also penalized, this year, for not updating the tax levels to inflation. To the same newspaper, she also spoke about how the Government considers updating the IRS levels to inflation, around 3.5%, to avoid purchase losses. To Pessoas by ECO Susana mentioned that one of the factors that may be driving the number of Portuguese professionals working from home. “(…) is the increase in fuel prices”.

Ricardo Zózimo and Daniel Traça

Daniel Traça and Ricardo Zózimo were interviewed by Visão about the almost 1,700 young people who arrived in Carcavelos to follow master's programs, among which more than 60% came from outside Portugal. Daniel Traça also spoke about the same topic to RTP  and Correio da Manhã.

Researchers Corner

In schools, the pandemic is not over

New evidence was recently published stressing the impact the pandemic left on student learning. In May the world bank compiled 35 studies for different countries which compared the student performance before and after the school closures during the lockdowns. These results point that a student has lost on average about one-third to one-half years’ worth of learning. Consistently across these different studies, this learning loss is more pronounced for students from disadvantageous backgrounds. Now, new data for the United States strengthen these conclusions. Last week it was published the 2022 results on NAEP - National Assessment of Educational Progress- a Reading Mathematics test that tracks students since the 1970’s. This data shows a significant fall of the 9-year-old students’ performance, wiping away two decades of progression. For example, in maths the share of students achieving a basic proficiency level fell from 44% in 2020 to 37% in 2022. Once again, the fall is more pronounced for students in the lowest performance deciles, widening the already large learning disparities between students.

This evidence is a clear sign that learning recovery remains a key policy issue as well as remediation programs to avoid that this learning loss remains through the rest of these students’ school life.
