Knowledge Centers' first annual meeting

SDG #. Description

In September Nova SBE organized the first Annual Meeting of the Knowledge Centers (KCs). The goal was to foster inter-KCs collaborations, namely, to strengthen international and national research grant applications. The event was open to members of the KCs, core faculty, researchers, and PhD candidates. The one-day meeting included the presentation of the nine KCs —the team, research interests, databases, methodologies, and/or other aspects deemed relevant – and the presentation of ongoing/potential or finished projects that could have a follow-up. The presentations aimed to reflect on potential collaborations with the other KCs. This year edition was organized by Judite Gonçalves, from the Health Economics & Management KC, with the support of the Research & Innovation Funding and the Research Office. The KCs will rotate and each will organize the meeting in the coming years. We hope this Annual Meeting will bring the KCs closer together and provide a fruitful ground for strong research collaborations.

Researchers Corner

Consumers respond positively to activist brands when they are perceived as helping to beat an opposition in a socio-political debate

What if brand activism were detrimental to brands? My research shows that brand activism may backfire because speaking up on partisan socio-political issues often sparks controversy, and when it does, consumers are put off by it. We find that this happens because when brands spark controversy, they exude qualities of dominant leadership to consumers: they signal that they are agentic – they can influence outcomes through their actions, but also that they are abrasive – they are willing to confront those who oppose their views. Indeed, when we present participants with brands that spark (vs. don’t spark) controversy, purchase intentions for brands that spark controversy is reduced because it is perceived as more abrasive. However, we find that when consumers perceive that the brand takes a stand on issues in which they would lose something if their opposition were to win the debate (e.g. abortion bans), the brand’s abrasiveness is seen as a desirable tool to fight the opposition. In such cases, brands that spark controversy benefit from higher purchase intention. As such, our theorizing & current evidence offer some hope to companies who want to participate in important socio-political debates.
