SDG #. Description
With the title “Co-creating people-centric sustainable neighbourhoods through urban regeneration (WeGenerate)” and coordinated by the Fraunhofer Society for the Development of Applied Research EV seeks to infuse the elements of people and co-creation in the urban regeneration processes. In a highly participatory process, cities, citizens, communities, businesses, researchers, and practitioners – take ownership of the urban regeneration processes and co-create together sustainable, people-centric, accessible, and beautiful neighbourhoods. This project is based on the stories of four neighborhoods and their communities in different parts of Europe, in different stages of development and facing different urban challenges but sharing the same vision of positive change. WeGenerate will help them to reinvent themselves and in the process find new values and opportunities. Advanced digital will be implemented and experimented to support decision-making and stimulate citizen engagement. Expertise in Social Science and Humanities is called upon to foster social innovation and participatory actions across the project. In addition, the art and cultural dimensions will be drawn on in the co-creation processes. Four sustainable and people-centric neighbourhoods will be realized by the end of the project, and the legacy will be upheld through replication by our Fellow Cities and others, who are inspired by the WeGeneration stories. Nova SBE receives €218,875.00 from this project.
According to the Olin Business School CFAR Finance Research Ranking, Nova SBE ranked 5th in Europe and 28th worldwide in research productivity per capita in Finance, from 2016 to 2019. This is another important recognition of how research is central to Nova SBE’s culture and how its scholars always strive to create new scientific knowledge.

Are Students Evaluations of Teaching an effective tool to assess professors’ teaching performance?
Students’ evaluations of teaching (SET) are used by universities as an indicator of instructors’ teaching effectiveness and guide institutional decisions on personnel matters such as rewards, teaching awards, promotions, and tenure (Benton and Cashin, 2014; Davis, 2009). Despite its pervasive usage, scholarly knowledge has consistently demonstrated that SETs are poor indicators of instructors’ teaching quality because these results are largely biased (Kreitzer and Sweet-Cushman, 2022). SET results are affected by aspects unrelated to teaching effectiveness, particularly those that are linked to instructors’ identity (e.g., gender, race, sexual orientation, accent, disability status).
Research has consistently demonstrated that instructors with socially marginalized characteristics (e.g., women, people of color, non-native speakers, non-heterossexual, people with disabilities) are evaluated worse than their non-marginalized peers (e.g., DiPietro and Faye, 2005; Heffernan, 2023; MacNell et al., 2015). Scholars agree that SETs contributes to the amplification of the (preexisting) inequalities between marginalized groups and the dominant group: instructors from marginalized groups are being promoted later as they tend to delay their applications for tenure in the face of such poor teaching evaluations (Hefferman, 2022).
Moreover, SETs results, and particularly the comments made by students on these evaluations, have severe negative effects on the mental health of instructors (Hutchinson et al., 2023). Whereas all instructors, regardless of their identity or social groups they belong to, receive negative comments, the content of these is different for individuals with marginalized identities (Tucker, 2014). Instructors from non-marginalized groups more frequently receive negative comments regarding the course they taught (e.g., “this course is dumb”; Hefferman, 2022), while their peers from marginalized groups receive comments addressing their individual characteristics (e.g., gender, race, ableness, sexual orientation) (Tucker, 2014). These comments (e.g., “fagot”; “slut”; “fat”; Hefferman, 2022) are abusive, hurtful, and defamatory, and are associated with increased distress, poor well-being and even with the need to look for medical help to cope with it (Lakerman et al., 2022).
University managers are aware of this problem (Tucker, 2014), but the costs of altering or disregarding the SETs seems to outweigh the perceived gains (Hefferman, 2022). The question is: if universities, and business schools in particular, are at the forefront of social impact and organizational social responsibility, why are they still relying on practices (i.e., SET) that contribute to such inequality? Also, business schools are built on the shoulders of meritocracy in which merit or talent is (or it should be) the only measure for sorting people into positions and distributing resources (Scully, 1997). So how can business schools advocate that everyone has the same opportunities for advancement when the field is so unevenly equated?
