Achievements

  • Pedro Neves new research handbook

Pedro Neves, alongside Birgit Schyns and Kimberley Breevaart, just launched the research handbook Destructive Leadership, Forms, Context and Boundary Conditions (Edward Elgar Publishing). The book is a collection of contributions in the field of destructive leadership. "Destroying individual lives, disrupting team processes, damaging organizations’ reputations, and even threatening democracies, it is no wonder that destructive leaders have been the talk of the town for many years. (...) As long as we do not give destructive leadership the scholarly attention it deserves, both scientists and practitioners may wrongly believe that we go overboard in problematizing destructive leadership or that such stance is a mere opposition to the new trends in the positive management approach." (from the introduction).

The institute also aims to promote inclusive leadership and facilitate dialogue among various stakeholders, including political forces and ideological groups, to combat polarization and encourage collective problem-solving. The management team includes Luis Cabral as Academic Director, Pedro Martins as Deputy Academic Director, and Filipe Alfaiate as Executive Director.

Addressing Housing Challenges in Portugal: The Role of New Licensing Policies

Portugal’s housing market is facing increasing pressure, with the number of annual housing completions significantly lower than pre-crisis levels. Construction and renovation rates remain stagnant, partially influenced by long bureaucratic processes for legal and licensing approvals. Additionally, construction costs have risen in recent years, driven primarily by labor costs, further exacerbating the supply-side constraints. As demand grows, particularly in metropolitan areas such as Lisbon and Porto, the pressure on housing prices continues to rise, making affordability a growing concern.

Recent policy measures, notably the Simplex initiative, have sought to address inefficiencies in the housing market from the supply side. The reforms, launched in early March, aim to streamline the approval processes for construction and renovation projects. The reforms are a response to the bottlenecks that delay construction starts and contribute to housing supply shortages. However, regardless of the promises of the legislation, its impact remains uncertain. It is essential to rigorously evaluate whether these measures succeed in reducing bureaucratic delays, and construction constraints, and ultimately increase housing availability at more affordable prices.

Data from Statistics Portugal shows that the number of licensed dwellings in Lisbon and Porto has remained stable over the last six years. However, this stagnation has not been sufficient to meet the growing demand for affordable housing. Housing prices are shown to be negatively correlated with licensing rates (Glaeser and Gyourko, 2018). Recent legislative changes may signal a turning point, but comprehensive research is needed to assess their effectiveness. Understanding how these policies influence construction and renovation rates and housing prices will be crucial for future urban planning and economic stability.

 International Open Access Week

Our Library wants to let you know that this year’s International Open Access Week theme will focus on “Community over Commercialization.” This theme contributes to a growing recognition of the need to prioritize approaches to open scholarship that serve the best interests of the public and the academic community.
Ongoing critical questions include: What are the consequences when a small number of corporations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves? What are the hidden costs of business models that entrench extreme levels of profit while exacerbating inequity?
Open Access Week 2024 will be held from October 21st through the 27th. If you need more information about open publishing and how to share your research (papers or data) at the library we can help you. To explore the topic, visit the Library’s website or book an appointment with a librarian.
