Marta Almeida honored at NOVA University Day

SDG #. Description

Marta Almeida received an Honorable Mention in the Pedagogical Innovation Prize, at NOVA University Day, for her “Gaming in Accounting Teaching” project, developed with the support of the Enhanced Learning Office.

This project revolutionizes traditional accounting education by incorporating gamification and immersive digital case studies. Designed to boost student engagement and enhance educational outcomes, it transforms a paper-based case study into an interactive virtual environment where students collaborate on budgeting in simulated workplace scenarios.

By providing a real-life accounting experience within the classroom, the project bridges the gap between theory and practice, aligning with Nova SBE's commitment to integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application. This work not only modernizes and enlivens the teaching process but also improves comprehension and retention of complex concepts, fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and encourages collaboration and teamwork.

Researchers Corner

Does tree-planting lead to more carbon sequestration?

As global efforts intensify to meet climate targets, carbon is becoming an increasingly valuable asset. To enhance forest carbon stocks, economists have typically endorsed carbon pricing as the first-best policy. In my recent paper - The Forest Carbon Sequestration Paradox  - I use a new global dataset on net CO2e emissions since 2000 combined with land use and climate data, to study the relationship between forest cover and carbon sequestration. I then show how climatic factors, such as fire frequency and size, can turn additional forests into carbon sources. In fire-prone forests of Southern Europe, the U.S. West Coast, and parts of Australia and South Africa, increased forest cover may paradoxically result in higher net carbon emissions.

I then solve analytically a landscape-level bioeconomic model to study the economic incentives leading to sub-optimal forest carbon sequestration. I show that, while carbon pricing induces sequestration by improving forest management at the intensive margine, it can lead to an oversupply of forests at the extensive margin, undermining the global carbon sink. More generally, my findings reveal that tree-planting is only a net carbon sink when the carbon gains on marginal lands outweigh incremental emissions across the landscape.

Key ways to use Figshare

Key ways to use Figshare (Nova SBE’s Data Repository) to enhance your research proposal:

Demonstrate Data Management Planning

Figshare can be an integral part of your data management plan, which is often required in research proposals. You can:

  • Specify Figshare as the repository where you will store and share your research data. This shows you have a concrete plan for making your data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).
  • Describe how you will use Figshare's features like DOIs, licensing options, and version control to ensure proper data citation and reuse

Showcase Previous Work

Highlighting your existing research outputs on Figshare can strengthen your proposal:

  • Include DOIs of datasets, code, or other materials you've previously shared on Figshare to demonstrate your commitment to open science.
  • Create a collection in Figshare that brings together all relevant prior work and cite it in your proposal.

Plan for Open Science Practices

Outline how you'll use Figshare throughout your project:

  • Describe plans to share preprints, protocols, or preliminary data on Figshare during the research process.
  • Explain how you'll use Figshare to comply with funder mandates for open access and data sharing.

Enhance Collaboration

Highlight how Figshare will facilitate collaboration:

  • Describe how you'll use Figshare's private sharing features to securely collaborate with team members before publication.
  • Explain plans to use Figshare collections to group related outputs from the project.

Increase Research Impact

Emphasize how using Figshare can boost the visibility and impact of your work:

  • Mention Figshare's integration with other platforms like ORCID and GitHub to enhance discoverability.
