Access to Health Care
Access to health care is long-standing research topic in health economics. The pandemic COVID-19 brought new challenges to health systems, including how access to health care is transformed during and potentially after this period. It is well-known that health systems were taken by surprise with the pandemic and had to divert resources from other areas of activity to treat COVID-19 patients. Thus, access to health care by patients suffered a strong shock, coming from both demand and supply sides. Non-COVID-19 patients refrained from looking for care, being afraid of contagion (15% of people surveyed in June 2020 decided to miss appointments). Health care providers cancelled programmed contacts with patients, as they needed the resources to treat COVID-19 patients (20% of people surveyed in June 2020 mentioned it). The short-term challenges are to reinforce trust of patients in the safety of health providers, and to increment ability of providers to reach, see and treat patients.
